I have a super power that I had forgotten about. If I need to wake up at a certain time the next day for any reason, I will wake up at or before that time. If I set an alarm for a certain time in the morning, I will wake up at or before that time. It's a pretty useful power, though not exactly grounds for membership in the Justice League. This power has grown dusty from disuse because I haven't worked normal hours or an office job in a couple years.
My powers came back with a vengeance this weekend.
I made the mistake of thinking to myself on Saturday, "Wow! I sure could go for some insanely ornate Sunday breakfast tomorrow. Too bad it's a holiday weekend. I'd have to get up before the sun to get a table at O'Rourke's."
Due to a crippling yet legal chemical dependency, I am not typically a morning person these days. I went to bed kind of early on Saturday night (1 am) and thus woke up early on Sunday morning. (5 am) This is why my power is a blessing and a curse.
O'Rourke's is a nationally-known gourmet diner in the next town over from me. It's an actual old-school metal diner, cramped and a little bit dingy. It looks like a piece of shit on the outside but the food is obscenely ornate, high-end fare the likes of which you have never seen in a diner. It's in a college town. Needless to say, there's a line out the door at 10am on a Sunday.
The fella that runs the diner is named Brian and is the only person I have ever met who does not look like a douche in a beret. Last time I was in there I got the "Brian's Breakfast"- which is a completely random plate full of whatever he feels inspired to make at a given moment. It's never the same thing twice and he usually comes out to explain it to you. (From memory, my last one was a goat cheese & fresh peach omelet with a breaded pork cutlet adorned with a touch of mango chutney. You don't forget these meals.)
Breakfast was had before the sun fully rose at a small booth with a juke box. I had the "Eggs O'Rourke" which is scrambled eggs with bacon, sausage and cheeses blended in along with toast, home fries and a orange/kiwi garnish. It's not their most insane item but it was huge and perfectly cooked. I just wasn't in the mood for andouille sausage or mornay sauce today.
I took the long way home & listened to the somewhat post-apocalyptic remix rap stylings of RJ-D2 as the sun came up. It was a hell of a morning and it wasn't even 7 am yet. I sat my ass down at the computer a little later and worked on and off until about 2 am. If I keep this up all week I might even get caught up on projects.
